With the latest technologies, our medical team successfully performs a delicate trigeminal and facial nerve operation, ending years of pain for a young patient.

Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital in Jeddah witnessed are markable medical achievement: a precise and rare surgical procedure to treat trigeminal neuralgia, which ended years of suffering for a young patient.

The 25-year-old patient arrived at the hospital from theEastern Province, suffering from severe, shock-like pain episodes on the left side of his face. After being diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia (fifth cranial nerve pain), he underwent intensive drug treatments, including anticonvulsants and strong controlled analgesics, without significant improvement.

After being transferred from the Neurology Department to the Neurosurgery Clinic, under the supervision of Dr. Shadi Salem—a consultant neurosurgeon and spine surgeon, who holds a German Board certification with over 20 years of experience in Germany—detailed examinations revealed an arterial loop around the trigeminal nerve and another around the facial nerve, causing direct pressure and hindering the effectiveness of drug treatments.

After explaining the condition to the patient and discussing treatment options, the medical team decided to perform a unique surgical procedure, a first for the hospital. This involved isolating the trigeminal and facial nerves from the arteries looped around them at the skull base through microvascular decompression (Janetta Operation). This was done through a precise incision no larger than 2 cm, in the area between the cerebellum and the brainstem.

The latest advanced technologies were used in the operation, including a surgical microscope, a neuronavigation system, and intraoperative neuromonitoring. A comprehensive medical team, including anesthesiologists, nurses, and physical therapists, participated in the procedure.

Thank God, the operation was a complete success. The pain episodes disappeared immediately after surgery, and the patient recovered without any complications.

This medical achievement is a new step added to Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital's record in advanced brain and nerve surgeries, affirming its growing capabilities in providing specialized healthcare according to the highest global standards.
