In continuation of the series of achievements at Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital (DSFH) in Jeddah, the Neurosurgery Team successfully performed a delicate procedure to save a 7 year old child. The child had been suffering from loss of balance while walking, accompanied by severe headaches and recurrent vomiting.
Medical examinations revealed that the child had a tumor located in the cerebellum, extending into the brainstem. This tumor caused an obstruction in the drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), leading to hydrocephalus (water on the brain) and enlargement of the cerebral ventricles. Due to the tumor's complex location and large size, the surgery presented a significant challenge, requiring immediate intervention using the latest surgical capabilities and technology.
During the operation, the medical team utilized cutting-edge techniques, such as intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM), the neuronavigation system, the ultrasonic surgical aspirator, and the surgical microscope, to ensure the precision of the resection and the safety of the patient.
By God's grace, the team managed to completely remove the tumor and safely close the skull without any complications. The child was discharged from the hospital to continue follow-up treatment with the Oncology Department.
The operation was led by Neurosurgeons Dr. Khalid Abdel Shafi and Dr. Mohammed Abu Hayyah, alongside Anesthesiologist Dr. Mohammed Abdullah, with the support of the nursing and technical staff. This exemplifies the professional medical collaboration that ensures patient safety and achieves the best possible outcomes.
