A 59-year-old patient presented with severe abdominal pain, significant weight loss, and progressive abdominal distension. A multidisciplinary team at Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital – Jeddah successfully performed a complex surgical procedure to remove a rare and Giany gastric tumor.
Advanced imaging, including a CT scan and endoscopic ultrasound, revealed a rare tumor representing approximately 1% of gastrointestinal tumors. The mass exceeded 22 cm in size and occupied nearly half of the abdominal cavity, in close proximity to major blood vessels.
Following evaluation by a multidisciplinary tumor board, urgent surgical intervention was recommended to prevent serious complications such as bleeding, intestinal obstruction, or clinical deterioration.
Due to the complexity of the case, an open oncologic surgery was performed. The tumor was completely removed en bloc without rupture, along with partial resection of the stomach and colon, followed by safe reconstruction of the gastrointestinal tract.
The resection lasted approximately two hours and was completed successfully without complications. The patient was discharged in a stable condition after five days.
Histopathological results confirmed complete tumor excision with no residual malignant cells, indicating successful radical removal and an expected cure rate exceeding 90%.
The procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary medical team, consisting of Dr. Sohayb Faleh, Consultant, General Surgery and Complex Oncologic Surgery, Dr. Abdulrahman AlOtaibi, Consultant, Colorectal Surgery, Endoscopy and Robotic Surgery, Dr. Ammar AlDabbagh, Consultant Gastroenterology, and Dr. Mohammed Salah, Consultant Anesthesiology, in addition to the Nursing team.
