A multidisciplinary medical team at Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital – Jeddah successfully saved the life of a newborn with a complex congenital abdominal wall defect that caused a large portion of the intestines to protrude outside the abdominal cavity. The case was managed through an urgent medical and surgical intervention that resulted in an excellent clinical outcome.
A pregnant woman arrived at the hospital’s Emergency Department late at night after the congenital defect had been identified during labor at another hospital. The severity of the condition required immediate intervention and advanced neonatal care upon delivery.
The Obstetrics and Gynecology team performed an emergency cesarean section, while the Pediatric Surgery team was on standby to receive the newborn immediately after birth. Following the initial assessment, the team confirmed a major abdominal wall defect with a significant portion of the intestines located outside the abdominal cavity.
The newborn was then transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where a multidisciplinary team stabilized the condition before proceeding to the operating room for a delicate surgical procedure. The Pediatric Surgery team successfully returned the intestines to their normal position within the abdominal cavity and repaired the congenital defect.
The newborn showed remarkable improvement following the surgery. Enteral feeding was introduced gradually over the following days, and the recovery progressed exceptionally well, allowing the baby to be discharged home in good health. Subsequent follow-up visits confirmed excellent healing of the abdominal wall and reassuring clinical outcomes, with the family expressing their gratitude and appreciation to the medical team.
The success of this case was made possible through the collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary team, including Dr. Hisham Basmah, Consultant Pediatric Surgeon; Dr. Heba AlSheikh, Consultant Neonatologist; Dr. Anas Zaytun, Neonatal Intensive Care Specialist; Dr. Wael Reda, Consultant Anesthesiologist; along with the nursing staff and allied healthcare professionals.
This case reflects the readiness of Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital – Jeddah to manage critical and complex medical conditions through integrated multidisciplinary care and advanced medical services, ensuring the highest standards of patient care and achieving the best possible clinical outcomes.
