Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital – Jeddah managed a critical case involving a 24-year-old patient who presented with severe and progressively worsening headaches over a two-week period, accompanied by symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, including double vision, nausea, persistent vomiting, recurrent hiccups, and loss of balance.
Upon arrival, the patient’s condition had significantly deteriorated. He was admitted in a wheelchair, unable to walk, with concerning neurological signs requiring immediate medical intervention.
MRI imaging revealed a large posterior fossa brain tumor compressing the fourth ventricle and extending toward the foramen magnum, causing obstructive hydrocephalus and dangerously elevated intracranial pressure.
With the patient’s rapid clinical deterioration and signs suggesting impending brain herniation, he was urgently admitted to the intensive care unit, and emergency surgical intervention was initiated without delay.
Under the supervision of the specialized medical team, a series of advanced procedures were performed, including Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV) to restore cerebrospinal fluid circulation, insertion of an External Ventricular Drain (EVD), and posterior cranial tumor resection using advanced microsurgical techniques.
By the grace of God, the medical team successfully controlled the intracranial pressure and completely removed the tumor. Postoperative imaging confirmed significant improvement in the hydrocephalus, while pathology results identified the tumor as an Astrocytoma.
The patient was discharged from the hospital following significant clinical improvement, with an ongoing medical follow-up plan in place.
The multidisciplinary team managing this case included Dr. Shadi Salem, Consultant Neurosurgery; Dr. Abdulrahman Alrashdi, Surgical Assistant; Dr. Rami Qsous, Consultant Anesthesiology; Dr. Hussein Waheed, Consultant Anesthesiology; in addition to the Neurosurgery Nursing Team, all working in close coordination to ensure rapid intervention and comprehensive care for this critical condition.
This case reflects the speed of medical response, expertise of specialized teams, and the use of advanced technologies at Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital – Jeddah in managing highly complex and life-threatening neurological conditions, delivering the highest standards of patient care.
