In a significant medical achievement, a multidisciplinary team at Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital Jeddah successfully performed four thyroidectomy surgeries using the da Vinci robotic surgical system through a transoral approach. This marks the first achievement of its kind in Saudi Arabia and reflects the use of advanced surgical technologies in thyroid and head and neck surgery.
The surgical team was led by Prof. Hani Zuhair Almarzouqi, Consultant in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Oncology Surgery at Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital, and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at King Abdulaziz University, alongside Dr. Huda Anwar Al-Sayed, Consultant in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery at Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital, and Assistant Professor at King Abdulaziz University.
The technique allows surgeons to access and remove the thyroid gland through the mouth using the robotic surgical system, without an external incision in the neck and therefore without a visible scar in the area. The robotic system also provides enhanced precision and control during surgery, supporting work within delicate anatomical areas.
Robotic thyroid surgery is one of the advanced applications of modern surgical technology, combining the expertise of the surgical team with the capabilities of the robotic system and expanding the surgical options available to patients based on the medical assessment of each case.
The four surgeries were successfully performed through the combined efforts of the surgical team and the Anesthesiology Department, led by Dr. Adel Fayek and Dr. Marwan Al-Fakhrani, alongside the nursing teams and Operating Room Management led by Dr. Hisham Basmih. This multidisciplinary collaboration highlights the importance of coordination between medical teams when applying advanced surgical technologies.
